School district recommends registering for kindergarten early

Gabriola Elementary will host an open house on June 20 for families with kids entering kindergarten this September.

The drop-in event takes place between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. and will include various learning centres as well as an outdoor story walk. Families will meet the kindergarten teacher as well as school secretary and principal. Along with a tour of the school, incoming students will receive a free backpack and learning bag.

Families will also receive information on interviews and gradual entry.

Kindergarten registration is online only through the Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools website, www.sd68.bc.ca/kindergarten-students. The website also has details about deferred enrolment.

Registration opens in January and the district “highly, highly encourages” students are registered as early as possible to assist the district with school planning and resources for all grades in relation to class sizes and staffing, according to Gillian Robinson, NLPS director of communications. “It also helps place children in their classes for the year as soon as possible in September the earlier we have registrations,” Robinson said.

The district hosted an online kindergarten information session on May 3; the recording is available on the NLPS YouTube channel.

According to NLPS’s website, registrations are still being accepted for the coming school year but space is limited. For the 2024-25 school year, NLPS is projecting 990 full-time equivalent kindergarten students across the district, up from 956 this year. The projection for the current school year was 993 FTE. NLPS said it does not give projections for individual schools.
