The mostly-black range was anything but one-dimensional.
In Paris on Saturday, Rei Kawakubo showed her latest collection for Comme des Garçons. Done almost entirely in black, with every model sporting jet-black hair, the overall vibe of Fall 2019 felt darker that her last few outings, though not unfamiliar for Kawakubo who is no stranger to black. And the collection still had an abundance of dimension and texture thanks to a thoughtful mix of cut-outs and bulges and a wide range of fabrics and treatments from fishnet to velvet to leather to lace. Occasional bows and ruffles lent a sweet, girly touch to some looks while biker shorts, leggings and sneakers lent athletic touches to others. The frequent use of leather, metal, hardware, fishnet and plaid gave off a punk feel. Overall, it was a testament to what Kawakubo can do with very limited use of color or print — a lot.
