Senior accused of killing his son-in-law will be released on bail

A 73-year-old Edmonton man accused of killing his son-in-law was granted bail on Wednesday.

Roberto Robles is facing second-degree murder charges in the death of his son-in-law Armando Cosmea-Aspillaga.

As a condition of his release, Robles must turn in his passport, and remain under house arrest, except to meet with his parole officer.

He is still allowed to visit the scene of the homicide in order to care for his granddaughter as long as he is accompanied by his wife or his daughter.

On June 15th, police responded to a domestic dispute call at the home Cosmea-Aspillaga, 38, shared with his estranged wife Flavia Robles.

When officers arrived, they found Cosmea-Aspillaga dead inside.

The next day Robles was charged in his death.

Cosmea-Aspillaga's long-time friend Jensy Menendez openly wept and shook her head as she sat in the courtroom during the bail hearing. She says the judge's decision to grant bail was difficult to hear

Menendez is worried about telling Cosmea-Aspillaga's mother in Cuba who left Edmonton last week

"It's going to be a big disappointment for her," she said.

Menendez said Cosmea-Aspillaga's relationship with his in-laws was bad from the beginning.

"They always said that he was no good, he didn't have an education," she said. "For them, education was very important. So he was good for nothing."

Menendez says the couple was still living together because they were fighting over custody of their daughter.

She is working on getting visas to bring Cosmea-Aspillaga's mother, and sister back to Edmonton for the trial.
