Three shot, one dead, in Northwest Miami-Dade, police say. Argument behind strip center

Three people were shot, one of them fatally, in Northwest Miami-Dade Friday afternoon, police said.

The shooting happened around 1 p.m. behind the West Airport Shopping Centre at 7367 NW 36th St., about a mile east of Doral, according to the emergency calls, police said.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue told the Miami Herald that two people were taken to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital — one person by helicopter and one by ambulance. Another person was treated at the scene for minor injuries, a fire rescue spokesperson said.

Detective Andre Martin, a Miami-Dade police spokesman, said an argument precipitated the gunfire.

Once shots rang out, several people scattered. The person who died was found at the scene, Martin said.

So far, police have five people detained who had “various degrees of involvement” in the shooting, Martin said, adding, that as of Friday afternoon, no arrests had been made.

A Miami Herald reporter saw one young man detained outside of Doral’s DCN Church, Dios Con Nosotros, following the incident.

Yalitza Hernandez, manager at Zerpa’s Antojos Criollos, 4015 NW 79th Ave., said she saw the incident happen via her store’s security cameras at about 1:10 p.m.

The bakery is in the same plaza as DCN Church.

According to Hernandez, three men approached the man who was apprehended by police.

“It was three young men, and they called the cops,” she said. “But when the cops came, the young man sitting down said the three young men were trying to rob him.”

The mother of the man who was apprehended also said the three young men were trying to rob her son.

Michael Dodd of Long Island, New York, was staying at the La Quinta Inn next to the shopping center and went out for coffee from the nearby McDonald’s when he was surprised by the flashing lights of the police vehicles and yellow tape surrounding the area.

“I came from down there to go to the McDonald’s,” he said. “I started walking down and saw all of the police cars.”
