Shakira rocks New York with historic pop-up show in Times Square

The "She Wolf" has taken a ferocious bite out of the Big Apple.

Shakira took New York City’s Times Square by storm on Tuesday night after announcing a free pop-up show on social media just hours before.

The Latin popstar took the TSX Stage for a historic performance in the Manhattan entertainment hub. According to a press release, the singer played to a crowd of over 40,000 people, the largest audience for a performance in Times Square.

Shakira opened the show with a performance of her iconic dance anthem "Hips Don't Lie." The Colombian songstress kept the momentum going with a sizzling medley of her reggaeton hits "Te Felicito" and TQG" and later rocked out on guitar for "Cómo Dónde y Cuándo."

For those who weren't able to attend the show in person, fans can view a portion of the performance plus exclusive behind-the-scenes footage in the upcoming special "Shakira Desde Times Square." The special will stream on Vix Saturday at midnight PT.

The pop-up show follows the release of Shakira’s latest album “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran,” which dropped Friday. The LP, Shakira’s 12th release overall, marks her first studio effort in seven years.

"For a long time I put my career on hold, to be next to (ex-boyfriend) Gerard (Piqué), so he could play football. There was a lot of sacrifice for love,” Shakira recently told The Sunday Times.

“Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran”: Shakira has a searing song with Cardi B and it's the best one on her new album

Among the 16 tracks on her album, including the Bizarrap collaboration “Bzrp Music Sessions Vol. 53,” Shakira is joined by a parade of guests: Cardi B, OzunaRauw Alejandro, Grupo Frontera, Karol G and Fuerza Regida.

Shakira’s collaboration with Cardi B, opening track “Punteria, is a clear standout on the album, writes USA TODAY music critic Melissa Ruggieri. Over an insistent dancefloor beat, the bilingual song – loosely translated to “takes aim” – shifts between Shakira singing about being captivated even when everything wrong feels right and some trademark spicy rapping from Cardi B.

They’re a potent duo, and the song sets the tone for an album that naturally shifts from engaging Latin pulses to piercing ballads, all while celebrating female empowerment.
