A Shania Twain fan is facing serious charges after allegedly staging her own abduction.

The massive, and very expensive, manhunt launched to locate Rachael Mattice, even caught the attention of Twain, who appealed to her Twitter followers for help.

The New York woman was reported missing on June 23, after vanishing from her family’s cabin.

Her mother, Wendy Mattice, appealed to the media, telling Fox News that her disappearance was “not in her nature.”

A search effort was launched, which included helicopters and canine search teams.

Her close friend appealed to Twain, Mattice’s favourite singer, in an Instagram post.

The next day, the country star tweeted a message out to her followers.

“I’ve heard the story of Rachael Mattice & urge anyone with information to come forward to the police & help her return to her family,” she wrote.

Police had even developed a detailed description of a suspect in the false kidnapping. They now say he doesn’t exist.

Investigators spoke with a witness, nearly a month after Mattice disappeared, who said he’d picked her up and drove her to a seasonal camp, which belonged to a relative of her boyfriend.

Two other witnesses verified the information. Medical reports also concluded she did not suffer any abuse.

Mattice claims she had been “forcibly abducted,” kept in a shed, beaten, bound and blindfolded, before being returned close to her parents’ home.

At the time of her disappearance, Mattice was being investigated for prescription drug theft at the nursing home where she worked.

Last Friday, police announced that the abduction case had been closed and Mattice would face charges.

If convicted, Mattice faces $1000 fine or up to a year in prison.
