Sharron Bryce upset over Regina election opponent's flyer

Regina city council to be sworn in Monday

A Regina councillor is angry about an election opponent's flyer that says she doesn't live in the city.

Ward 7 candidate John Gross has distributed a flyer to constituents saying incumbent councillor Sharron Bryce lives at Regina Beach.

Bryce said that's untrue: She lives in Regina, and doesn't own any property in Regina Beach. She said she doesn't rent a cottage or any other property there either.

"He is slamming my name," she said.

"It's making me look dishonest."

She called the flyer "American-style, dirty politics I have never seen in Regina."

Bryce has had her lawyer send Gross a cease-and-desist letter.

Gross said he got the information from sources he trusts. He said he wouldn't "smear anybody."

Gross added he is concerned about how well Bryce represents the ward and communicates with constituents, and her meeting attendance record.

He said he tried to contact Bryce without success. Bryce, however, said she hasn't received any calls or messages from her opponent on this matter.

Gross' flyer has prompted Ward 7 voters to contact Bryce about where she lives, she said.

"I'm angry about it, and it's upsetting," she said.

Election rules

City hall has also received phone calls asking about Bryce's place of residence, said chief returning officer Jim Nicol.

Election rules require that candidates are Regina residents and have lived in the city for at least three months prior to being nominated. Nomination papers need 25 signatures from ward voters.

Nicol said the municipality doesn't independently verify residences; it takes candidates at their word.

People in Regina head to the polls on Wednesday.
