The smart oven that deploys AI for burn detection
Bakers, rejoice: Samsung’s new smart oven uses artificial intelligence to warn you if your dish is about to burn.
The new in-wall oven features an internal camera paired with food- and burn-recognition algorithms that can identify more than 100 different types of meals and ingredients. That sets it apart from the counter-top ovens that currently offer similar AI tricks, including models from June, Brava, and GE – many of which look like microwaves.
Together, Samsung says the tech in its oven can provide you with the ideal temperature, time, and mode for dishes and send you notifications to prevent burning.
It announced the Bespoke AI Oven at the cavernous CES tech event in Las Vegas, where startups and established brands are showing off their most eye-catching gadgets, from truly wireless TVs to motion-sensing make-up applicators.
The Korean electronics giant has long been cramming sensors and screens into its kitchen appliances under the guise of making them “smart”. Much of it may seem unnecessary to general consumers – do you really need to take video calls on a fridge, for instance? – but an AI oven could be its best bet yet.
Imagine a time when you never need risk a ruined lasagne due to being distracted by Strictly.
It also helps that Samsung already has a smart home ecosystem and the brand recognition to make the tech mainstream. ââYou can connect the oven to Wi-Fi and use Samsung’s SmartThings Cooking platform to view the camera stream from your phone, fiddle with timers, and preheat the oven.
Still, the appliance isn’t without its quirks. For budding YouTubers, the internal camera can also be used to livestream what’s in the oven. Oddly, it features a push-to-open door mechanism instead of a traditional handle that sounds a tad dangerous on paper. Of course, there’s also a seven-inch touchscreen that lets you manually tinker with the settings.
If you’re already ingrained into Samsung’s mobile devices, the oven will be able to use your workout and diet stats to recommend meal options based on the ingredients you have lying around.
Samsung says the oven will launch in the EU and US in the third quarter of this year, with pricing yet to be announced.
