St. Patrick's Island bridge named after Calgary's 2nd mayor

City council has decided to name Saint Patrick's Island bridge after Calgary's second mayor.

The pedestrian bridge, which links the East Village with the island and the community of Bridgeland-Riverside, will be known as the George C. King Bridge.

King was Calgary's mayor in 1886 and 1887. The new $25-million bridge officially opened last fall after a delay caused by flooding in 2013.

Work on redeveloping Saint Patrick's Island is almost finished as well. The Calgary Municipal Land Corporation announced the park will open to the public this Friday.
