Stanley Cup tours Winnipeg with Jonathan Toews
Jonathan and Stanley are together again in Winnipeg.
The Winnipeg-born captain of the Stanley Cup champ Chicago Blackhawks, Jonathan Toews, is spending his day with NHL's holy grail in and around the city — and much of it is open to the public.
The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup on June 24 in a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins in the sixth game of the final series.
One of the benefits of winning the Stanley Cup is the opportunity every player gets to spend a day with it. Toews, 25, decided to bring it home and show it off.
The trophy arrived Friday morning at the airport and Toews hoisted it above his head to the applause of fans. He then buckled Stanley into the back of a car and headed to a meet-and-greet with fans at the Southdale Canadian Tire store.
From there, he will take the cup over to the Jonathan Toews Community Centre at 1188 Dakota St., where fans can get their photograph taken with the player and the prize between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
That's the arena where Toews grew up playing hockey in Winnipeg's St. Vital neighbourhood. It was renamed in his honour following Chicago's championship in 2010.
Toews is also planning to take the Stanley Cup to visit kids at the Children's Hospital before celebrating privately with family.
