Starbucks Mugs Recalled by Nestlé After Reports of Burns and Injuries from Overheating
The Consumer Product Safety Commission reported 12 incidents of mugs overheating or breaking
Nearly half a million Starbucks mugs are being recalled.
On Thursday, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that Nestlé USA’s Starbucks-branded metallic mugs have been recalled. The 440,500 mugs were included in 2023 holiday gift sets.
Per the CPSC’s official notice, there have been “12 incidents of mugs overheating or breaking resulting in 10 injuries.” The injuries included nine severe burns and blisters on hands and one cut on a customer's finger, per the report.
If the vessels are “microwaved or filled with extremely hot liquid, the mugs can overheat or break, posing burn and laceration hazards," the CPSC said.

The recall surrounds four gift sets that include a ceramic mug with metallic coating featuring Starbucks logos. Per the CPSC, they came in both 11-ounce and 16-ounce sizes and came in these gift sets: Starbucks Holiday Gift Set with 2 Mugs; Starbucks Classic Hot Cocoa and Mug; Starbucks Peppermint and Classic Hot Cocoas and Mug; and Starbucks Holiday Blend Coffee and Mug.
They were sold online and in Target and Walmart stores, along with military outlets, from November 2023 through January 2024.
A Nestlé spokesperson tells PEOPLE in a statement: “The quality, safety and integrity of our products are our number one priority. We initiated a recall of metallic mugs packaged in four seasonal, Starbucks-branded 2023 holiday gift sets due to a safety issue. We are working closely with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on this recall and cooperating fully, to ensure impacted consumers are notified and refunded.”
According to the CPSC, customers should “immediately” stop using the mugs and return them or reach out to Nestlé for a full refund.
