Starr power: South Pointe senior, NC Central commit happy to play in Carolinas Classic

Victoria “Starr” Morris has few qualms with life right now.

The South Pointe senior announced her commitment to North Carolina Central’s girls basketball program on Wednesday.

“When I went there, the vibes were really good, and the people, coaches, and players were really welcoming,” Morris said. “It’s a great HBCU, and they have a great biology department, which I’m planning to major in. All in all, I feel like it was just a perfect fit for me.”

The 5-foot-10 senior has now set her sights on Saturday for the 2024 Carolinas Classic All-Star basketball game, a showcase for some of the top senior basketball players from North and South Carolina.

“It feels great to be selected to represent South Carolina and South Pointe,” Morris said. “I’m just staying in the gym consistently and working on some of my weaknesses that have been shown throughout the season and trying to execute on my strengths and make them better.”

Morris is the second Stallion nominated to the Carolinas Classic but will be the first to actually participate in it. Trinity Adams was selected for the game in 2021, but there was not a game held that year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A four-year starter and two-time all-state selection at South Pointe, Morris averaged 18.3 points, 10.1 rebounds and 3.9 steals per game in her senior year as she helped the Stallions to back-to-back 25-plus win seasons for the second time in school history.

South Pointe head coach Stephanie Butler-Graham said that Morris put in the work and has steadily improved every year at the program. Butler-Graham is excited for Morris’s opportunity to compete at the Carolinas Classic and said that the best is yet to come.

“I know that although she had an outstanding career here at South Pointe, her best basketball is really in front of her,” Butler-Graham said. “North Carolina Central is getting a young lady who is hungry who really still feels that she’s got some things that she needs to prove to some folks. I’m just excited to see what she’s going to be able to do at the next level.”

The 2024 Carolinas Classic All-Star basketball game will be held March 23 at John T. Hoggard High School in Wilmington, N.C. The first game tips off at 3 p.m.
