They started high school in a pandemic. Now it’s time for the Class of 2024 to graduate.

The students who started their high school experience during the pandemic will now fill downtown Raleigh, Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill campuses to turn their graduation tassels.

The Wake County, Durham, Johnston, Chapel Hill-Carrboro, Orange and Chatham County school systems will hold graduation ceremonies over the next two weeks for members of the Class of 2024.

These students went through a challenging high school experience to reach graduation.

The Class of 2024 spent most of their freshman year taking only online classes and most of their sophomore year wearing face masks. Many of their classmates had to repeat their freshman year and might not graduate until next year.

Heavy traffic likely. Practice patience.

Graduation attendees are being asked to bring plenty of patience and to arrive early for the ceremonies. Graduates themselves are usually expected to arrive an hour early, so allow significant time for parking and traffic.

It’s particularly challenging for people traveling to downtown Raleigh for the Wake County school system’s graduation ceremonies. There will be 26 graduations in downtown Raleigh starting Thursday and running through June 14.

Some high schools already held their graduation in May or earlier in June.

How you can watch graduations online

If you can’t go in person, many schools stream the graduations online.

Some school districts have put together websites with their graduation schedules, links to watching the ceremonies online and tips for attending the ceremony.
