Stay alert: Another impactful storm eyeing Ontario early next week

Ontarians will barely have the chance to clean up from this latest winter storm before the region’s next impactful storm comes barreling down the pike toward the province.

Another low-pressure system will develop this weekend and roll toward the Great Lakes region, threatening a widespread slug of rain, snow, and ice as it enters Ontario early next week.

While the exact details are still fuzzy this far out, it’s likely going to be a disruptive storm for a region still cleaning up from this week’s major snow and ice event.

Folks across Ontario will spend Friday cleaning up the aftermath of this week’s high-end winter storm across the region. Major ice accretion and a heavy blanket of snow and ice pellets made for tough travel and even tougher cleanup.

A short reprieve from the active weather will last through this weekend, as occasional snow showers and flurries give way to temperatures climbing back above freezing by Sunday.

The breather won’t last long, though, as another major storm develops south of the border.

This Colorado low will rapidly deepen as it heads toward the Great Lakes region early next week, bringing the whole spectrum of wintry precipitation along its path.

We’ll most likely see the storm begin pushing into southern Ontario through the latter half of the day on Monday, lasting through Tuesday for most areas.

The precise path of the storm is crucial for how the storm will play out across southern Ontario. A more southern track would expose more of the region to straight snowfall, while a more northern track would allow more warm air to filter in and keep things liquid rain for a longer stretch.

However, if the centre of the low tracks straight across southern Ontario, we could face another messy divide slicing through the province, with rain, freezing rain, ice pellets, and snow falling throughout the region.
