Strong winds cause power outages, force school closure

'Very strong' winds blow through Toronto, downing trees and prompting warning by police

Strong winds caused power outages in the southern part of the province on Thursday morning, and forced the closure of a school.

St. Martins School in the Anglophone South School District was closed for the day due to a power outage.

As of 7 a.m., NB Power reported that 1,300 customers were without power in the Kennebecasis Valley and Fundy region. NB Power was able to restore many of those outages and only 98 customers across the province were without electricity as of 9 a.m.

At 6 a.m. Thursday morning, the Confederation Bridge announced it was also closed to all traffic due to poor weather conditions. The bridge opened again at 8:20 a.m.

CBC meteorologist Brennan Allen said the Confederation Bridge reported sustained winds of 125 km/h with the peak gust recorded at 148 km/h.

Allen said the high winds across Prince Edward Island and eastern Nova Scotia were due to a low-pressure system from the southwest, which also brought 25 mm of rain to the Fredericton area this week.

"New Brunswick was spared the worst," he said.

Due to high winds, Environment Canada issued a weather alert for Prince Edward Island and parts of Nova Scotia.

On P.E.I. strong westerly winds gusted from 50 km/h to 100 km/h. All of Cape Breton remains under wind warnings with gusts to 130 km/h in some areas.

The wind is expected to die down Thursday afternoon.
