A school teacher recently received an unexpected note from a young student — and it reduced him to tears.

Twitter user @Mainey_maine teaches in Atlanta, Georgia. His students call him Mr. J, and he recently tweeted an image that will help those of us who aren’t teachers understand why people like Mr. J choose such a demanding and often under-appreciated profession.

“So I walked in the classroom and found this letter on the desk that one of my kids wrote me and… I tried so hard not tear up,” reads the caption. The image is of a handwritten note (complete with grade school grammar) from one of his students, thanking him for being an incredible teacher.

The letter reads:

“To Mr. J,

Thank you for being an awesome teacher and for being amazing! This school year was so fun and I enjoyed it because if you. I wish more teachers was like you. I will never forget you. I look at you like my dad. I never met my real dad but it okay because you treat me like I’m your son. You make me so happy. Always feeding me when I am hungry and hug me when I am sad. I will never forget you Mr. J. I love you and I will never forget about you!

Love, Markus.”

The outpouring of support came quickly, and so did the likes — more than 323,000 in just one day.

All the positive direct messages on Twitter and outpouring of good vibes have proved almost more than Mr. J can handle, judging by his recent tweet:

It looks like Mr. J isn’t just loved by one student, but by most of Twitter —and judging by his student’s letter, he deserves all the recognition in the world.
