“The Substance” Trailer: Demi Moore Slips Down a Dangerous Path Seeking Youth in Wild Thriller

Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid star in 'The Substance'

Demi Moore plays a woman who sets out on a dangerous path for youth and beauty in The Substance.

The first teaser trailer for the body-horror film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, dropped on July 11, showcasing Moore, 61, alongside costars Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid. The Substance is written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, who made the 2017 film Revenge.

"Have you ever dreamt of a better version of yourself? Younger. More beautiful. Perfect," a narrator says at the start of the trailer, as Moore's character is shown staring at herself in a mirror with smeared makeup.

During a Cannes press conference in May, Moore told reporters, "I look for things that push me out of my comfort zone, the opportunity to make a better person and actor. This touched on so many themes that we all face: We seek validation and belonging."

"By doing [the movie] it takes us to extremes and allows us to step into it in a unique way," she added.

The Substance is in theaters Sept. 20.
