Sudden closure of Regina care home shrouded in mystery

Residents of Century Care Home in Regina had to scramble to find a new place to live after the facility suddenly closed this week.

The Ministry of Health said it became aware of a situation at the privately owned care home on Friday, but would not go into detail over what that situation entailed. The owner of the care home, as well as family members of some of the residents who were displaced, declined to comment.

The Personal Care Homes Act usually requires that a resident receive a 30-day notice before having to move. However, Director of Licensing for the Ministry of Health Dawn Skalicky-Souliere said that in some instances it is better for that notice period not to occur.

"It's all about ensuring the safety and well-being of residents, and we use that as our goal, that's our priority."

Skalicky-Souliere said six people lived at the care home, and all former residents have found either permanent or temporary places to live. She said the ministry will monitor those in temporary care until they find a long-term solution.
