Summerside mayor says city needs voice at cabinet table

The mayor of Summerside is concerned the city no longer has an MLA at the cabinet table.

Summerside did have a cabinet minister, but that changed when Tina Mundy resigned from cabinet one day after being sworn in.

Mayor Bill Martin said the second largest municipality in the province needs to have a voice on cabinet.

"I think it's imperative," said Martin. "Cornwall, Stratford each have a cabinet minister. Charlottetown has three. Effective today, we have none. I have got a lot of files on my desk that are going to require significant involvement at the provincial level. We clearly need to have someone designated as Summerside's voice at cabinet."

Martin plans to make the request during a lunch planned soon with Premier Wade MacLauchlan.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the premier's office says district 23, represented by cabinet minister Paula Biggar, contains a part of Summerside.

They note that all cabinet members represent the concerns of all Islanders.
