Sundance Square pulls its garage out of free parking program in downtown Fort Worth

You’ll need a little something extra if you want to use Sundance Square’s parking lot at 345 W. Third St. for free on nights and weekends.

Visitors to the downtown business district will now need parking validation from a Sundance Square tenant to get two and a half hours of free parking.

The change comes after Sundance Square pulled out of a program that subsidized parking at a handful of lots downtown. The program is funded by a special taxing district.

The company cited increased demand from tenants, employees and guests as the reason for leaving the program, according to a letter from a Sundance Square attorney sent to the city of Fort Worth.

The city shared the letter with the Star-Telegram, but declined to comment further.

The company also cut a check to the special taxing district for $1,509.35 to refund the parking subsidy for the rest of June, according to the letter.

Representatives for Sundance Square declined to comment further than the letter sent to the city.

The move reduces the amount of free parking downtown by 766 spaces, but doesn’t spell the end of completely free night and weekend parking.

Visitors can still use the Tower garage at 400 Taylor St., the 777 Main garage at 601 Commerce St, and the City Center Garage at 400 Jones St., according to the downtown advocacy non-profit Downtown Fort Worth Inc., which manages the special taxing district. There are 2,845 spots between those three lots, according to Downtown Fort Worth Inc. data.

Representatives for Downtown Fort Worth Inc. said they were unable to comment on lease negotiations between the taxing board and private property owners.
