Suspected drunk driver killed in 2-vehicle wreck after hit-and-run: Arlington police

Authorities are investigating a car crash from Friday that killed a driver who is accused of a hit-and-run that happened just before the deadly wreck, Arlington police announced in a news release.

At around 7 p.m. Friday, officers responded to the 1200 block of West Division Street to investigate a two-vehicle wreck involving a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze CZT and a Ford bus.

Witnesses told officers the driver of the Cruze, an adult male, was traveling westbound along West Division Street at a high speed when he ran a red light at the intersection of North Davis Drive. He started swerving and crossed into the eastbound lanes of West Division Street where he crashed into the bus, according to witness accounts.

The driver of the Cruze was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the vehicle, according to police. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators have not yet been able to identify the driver, police say.

The driver of the bus, the only passenger in the vehicle, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

During the investigation, officers determined the Cruze had been involved in a separate accident that occurred a few minutes earlier in the 600 block of West Division Street.

The driver of a Ford F-150 told officers she was stopped near a traffic light at Division and Cooper Street when the driver of the Cruze rear-ended her.

The drivers of the F-150 and the Cruze both pulled over to exchange information, but as they began talking the woman determined the man was intoxicated and said she was calling police, she told officers.

It was at that point the driver of the Cruze got back into his vehicle and headed westbound on West Division Street, according to police.

The woman driving the F-150 followed the Cruze and also pulled up to the other crash site, police say.

Officers found alcohol inside the Cruze, according to the release.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the name of the deceased once he has been positively identified and next of kin have been notified.
