Taber hay theft leads to charges against Lethbridge man

Taber police have arrested a man in connection with an alleged fraud involving more than $800,000 of hay.

The 33-year-old from Lethbridge has been charged with fraud over $5,000, theft over $5,000, and false pretenses over $5,000. He has been released on bail, with conditions, and is to appear in Taber Provincial Court on June 23.

Police say a local agriculture business was defrauded in 2013 after a man obtained hay under false pretenses and failed to reimburse the company. The alleged fraud took place between March and July of that year.

Investigators say they were forced to review a "massive amount of data" from several companies in Canada and the United States.

"The culmination of an arrest and charges in this matter is a great example of working through a large amount of information, liaising with special prosecutions and helping our local business community," said Insp. Graham Abela of the Taber Police Service in a press release.
