Teghan's top 5 things to do this weekend in Winnipeg (April 21-23)
This is a good weekend for turning off the lights and shutting out humanity in the name of saving the earth or something. But once you're done that, there's a pop-up in the Exchange, a DJ party at a legion, a party in St. Boniface (with poetry and jazz!) and a spring cocktail and dinner pairing in West Broadway.
You could, of course, also celebrate Earth Day among people at Fort Whyte. They'll have snacks and activities and the lovely folks at Art City to help your cute kids make art.
WHAT: DJs — Casual Friday at the ANAF
When: Friday, April 21, 10 p.m.
Where: ANAF Club 60 at 3-433 River Ave.
Cost: $5
There's going to be a little DJ dance party at the ANAF on Friday, and I think you should go.
Mama Cutsworth's DJ academy grads will be spinning soul, funk, hip hop and pop all night.
On the roster this time around are Flavis, DJ Shutterbug, Bronze Goddess and Princess Coldstare.
Drinks are cheap, and the dance floor is small, so go early!
WHAT: SHOP — Luckygirl Spring Pop Up
When: Saturday and Sunday
Where: Hut K at 300 Ross Ave.
Cost: $5
Luckygirl is back with another spring pop-up.
This time, there'll be about 50 different vendors each day at Hut K's gallery on Ross at Princess Street.
They'll have (in order of importance) food, coffee, art, clothes, jewelry, bath/body stuff and decor.
Admission is $5 for one day or $7 for both days, and they're asking anyone who comes to bring their own cups for coffee as well as their own shopping bags to make the event low-waste.
Oh and don't make the rookie mistake of going to a market before breakfast and trying to move through all the people moving at a glacial pace in a hunger rage.
Instead, stop at Clementine or Miss Brown's (both nearby) before you go so you can actually enjoy perusing some locally made stuff.
WHAT: MUSIC — Record Store Day
When: Saturday, April 22, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Where: Music Trader at 97 Osborne St.
Cost: Depends what you buy
Record Store Day is Saturday, which is a great excuse to be fiscally irresponsible and go buy yourself a bunch of records.
Music Trader is celebrating in the Village with live bands and DJs all day. The Vinyl Salon is up first from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and after that, Destination Moon, Satanic Rights, the Sorels, PC Cherry and Starland will be doing the music thing.
If you really don't need any more records, it's the season to buy a record for someone you think is cute, right?
WHAT: OUTDOORS — Earth Day at Fort Whyte
When: Sunday, April 23, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: Fort Whyte Alive at 1961 McCreary Rd.
Cost: FREE
Saturday is Earth Day, but if you want to celebrate it on Sunday, Fort Whyte is opening up its big gates and letting everyone in for free.
There's going to be music, a BBQ lunch, guided hikes, archery, bannock roasts, facepainting, animals to stare at and Art City will be there facilitating art stuff for your kids.
Fort Whyte can be tricky to get to if you don't have access to a vehicle, so they're offering free bus rides from a bunch of pickup spots around the city.
They're also doing group bike rides out to the preserve, and there's going to be a complimentary bike valet.
WHAT: FOOD — Spring cocktail pairing at Handsome Daughter
When: Sunday, April 23, 7 p.m.
Where: The Handsome Daughter at 61 Sherbrook St.
Cost: $75
The Handsome Daughter is doing a cocktail pairing dinner with chef Mike O'Connell and cocktail guy Mike Fox on Sunday.
The full menu is already published, so you can figure out if you're into it before you commit.
Duck breast and foie gras are on the list, and Fox has some wild-sounding cocktails, including one with dill, dragonfruit, grapefruit, beer and green Szechuan pepper. There's also a black garlic bloody mary that sounds very tasty.
This one is on the pricier end of stuff I typically suggest, but it includes all your food and drinks (six drinks, in fact) so it's actually a pretty good price. And gratuity is included!

When: Friday, April 21, 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Where: Théâtre Cercle Molière at 340 Provencher Blvd.
Cost: $15
There's a big party in St. Boniface Friday night courtesy of Culture Card and La Liberté.
There's going to be live music, DJs, art and poetry at Théâtre Cercle Molière on Provencher.
The MSG and Rayannah are performing, and Cédric Cedú N'künzu as well as Valentin Lehodey will be spinning French R&B and house.
