Tenacious D to play 5 ‘Rock the Vote’ concerts — including at Penn State. How to get tickets

“The Greatest Band in the World” is heading to Happy Valley.

Tenacious D — a comedy rock duo formed by actors Jack Black and Kyle Gass — is scheduled to perform at Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center at 8 p.m. Oct. 26, both the band and venue announced Wednesday. The show will be part of the band’s special five-concert “Rock the Vote” tour in October.

The small tour will take place in Indiana, Ohio and three key swing states in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Tickets at the Penn State show range between $35 and $99; the general public can purchase them starting 10 a.m. Friday via Ticketmaster, while students can buy tickets starting 10 a.m. Thursday.

The announcement comes on the heels of Black’s viral video publicly endorsing President Joe Biden at a recent fundraiser. Dressed in American flag overalls and a “Dark Brandon” T-shirt, the comedian joked about answering the call when democracy is at stake — in a speech that was not received well by conservatives.

This isn’t the first time Black or Tenacious D teamed up with Rock the Vote, an organization designed to empower young voters. In 2000, the band released a cover of “Time Warp” from the “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” with proceeds benefiting them. (Once again, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Rock the Vote.)

Black has performed a number of memorable roles as a comedian/actor, including in “School of Rock” (2003), “King Kong” (2005), “Tropic Thunder” (2008) and the “Jumanji” sequels (2017, 2019). He also voiced Po in the “Kung Fu Panda” franchise and Bowser in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”

But he and Gass have also proven to be a formidable band. They began in 1994 and have released four albums since 2001. Their 2003 concert DVD achieved gold and platinum status by the RIAA, and they’re just now nearing the end of their international, yearlong “The Spicy Meatball Tour” that’s included U.S. dates in California, Texas and Tennessee, in addition to countries like Australia, Belgium and Germany.
