It’s allergy season in Texas and for some people the itching and sneezing feels more intense right now. It could be the weather, experts say, because warmer temperatures lessen air quality which makes it harder to breathe.

Juniper, Ash, and Mulberry tree pollen allergens are common in Texas but experts say the symptoms are worse for those triggered by it in the spring. That’s because tree pollen counts are higher following mountain cedar tree season in the winter. Pollen is also produced by spring grass and weeds.

Summertime allergies are often triggered by grass pollen. The count tends to be high for a few weeks. Weeds also appear more in the summer, but pollen counts are better overall since the amount coming from trees decrease in the fall.

Fall has the lowest pollen count of all seasons. Though weed pollen lingers, the amount produced by trees and grass begin to drop.

The count climbs up again in the winter as mountain cedar trees begin to pollinate. Experts say approximately one billion pollen grains are released in the winter and it travels for hundreds of miles with heavy wind.

  • Cough.

The severity of symptoms may vary and some can be life threatening. All allergies can get worse with age.

According to a study by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, Dallas is the worst city in Texas to live with allergies. The study ranked 100 of the most populated cities based on over the counter allergy medication use, the number of allergy specialists, and pollen scores.

An allergic reaction may become more severe in older adults due to chronic illnesses and the deterioration of organs. Experts say the way to fight back against allergies is to take oral medications or use nasal spray.

They also suggest making lifestyle changes like using an air purifier in the bedroom, washing bed sheets frequently, and avoiding extended periods of time outdoors.
