Since its start almost five years ago, the Syrian civil war has destroyed and divided the city of Aleppo. The fighting between President Bashar Assad’s government forces in the west and rebel groups that captured the city in the east have led to thousands of residents dying and millions being displaced across the country.

With government forces imposing a siege, people stuck in the city have been cut off from humanitarian aid, supplies and food. Evacuations started Wednesday under a seemingly tenuous ceasefire.

A U.N. official has called the siege “a black chapter in the history of international relations.”
