Thief jailed after dramatic police chase in east London following Christmas Day burglary spree

A thief who has been jailed for a Christmas Day burglary spree which ended with a dramatic police chase through east London.

Ethan Veiro, 26, stole a car, bicycle, cash and other items in a series of raids on December 25, 2022.

He was pursued from Ilford and finally cornered when he drove onto the M11 with specialist Met teams blocking his exit and arrested him.

Veiro of Wood Green, north London, was sentenced to six years at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Tuesday.

He was found guilty of four counts of burglary and one count of robbery.

Police footage of the chase shown to the jury captures the dramatic moment Veiro is forced to pull over after a high speed pursuit. The thief, dressed in a hoodie, is hauled out of the car and surrounded by officers with is vehicle boxed in by marked police cars.

Sergeant Adam Sparrow, investigating officer, said: “We know the damaging effect burglaries can have to individuals and communities which is why in our A New Met for London plan we're working to reduce this type of crime across London.

“Veiro managed to commit the series of offences very quickly but was tracked and pursued through the streets by my officers. I commend their actions, which will mean he now spends a significant amount of time behind bars."The burglar began in the early hours of Christmas Day when he stole a car in Wood Lane, Dagenham, the court had heard.

The vehicle was later found abandoned on Waterbeach Road, Dagenham.He went on to target addresses across east London, escaping with house keys, a bicycle, cash and a set of car keys, which he used to steal another car.Met officers received reports of the stolen car and circulated a description of it.Veiro was located in the car at midday in Redbridge and a chase began when he failed to stop for officers.The pursuit continued into Essex but when Veiro drove onto the M11 specially trained Met officers performed a ‘tactical contact manoeuvre’ to safely stop the vehicle and prevent him from escaping.

He was arrested and taken into custody.
