This is the best diet for your overall health, according to nutrition experts

A panel of experts assessed 38 different diet plans – and came out with a winner, which has won every year for the past seven years.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, fad diets designed to cause rapid weight loss didn’t take the top slot – instead, it’s the DASH diet, promoted by an American government health department.

The DASH diet – designed to help patients lose weight and lower blood pressure – won out, because it’s healthy, good for weight loss and easy to follow.

The diet helps people cut down on sodium – and can lower blood pressure by 8 to 14 points over the long term in some patients, its makers say.

Last year, the panel said said of DASH, ‘Nutrients like potassium, calcium, protein and fiber are crucial to fending off or fighting high blood pressure.

‘You don’t have to track each one, though. Just emphasize the foods you’ve always been told to eat (fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean protein and low-fat dairy), while shunning those we’ve grown to love (calorie- and fat-laden sweets and red meat). Top it all off by cutting back on salt, and voilà!
