Three Northern principals selected as Canada's best

Three northerners are among 40 top principals from across the country, according to The Learning Partnership, a Toronto-based charity.

The list includes Lea Lamoureux at the Kaw Tay Whee School in Dettah, N.W.T., Jean Maclean at the Watson Lake Secondary School in Yukon, and Sonya Lonsdale at the Joamie Ilinniarvik elementary school in Iqaluit.

"I keep saying 'we,' and it is a 'we' thing," Lonsdale says. "I'm a very strong believer of the connection: it's kind of a triangle between home, school, and the connection with parents and staff and everyone involved."

Maclean in Watson Lake has recently been credited with helping to boost attendance by offering courses online.

The Learning Partnership is an educational charity supported by some of Canada's biggest businesses.

The award recipients will be in Toronto next month to take part in a week-long course on leadership.
