Torrential rain prompts weekend weather warnings

Expect a wet weekend in parts of Newfoundland, as the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment and Environment Canada warn a lot of rain and strong winds are on the way.

An approaching weather system is expected to bring periods of heavy rain and strong winds on Saturday, lasting into early Monday for some areas.

Environment Canada has issued special weather statements for much of Newfoundland that heavy rainfall with torrential downpours are expected.

Rodney Barney, meteorologist with the Gander weather office, told CBC that rain will move into southwestern Newfoundland Saturday afternoon, and will gradually make its way along the south coast.

"Areas along the south coast, generally from 50 to 100 millimetres right along the coastline, but just a little ways inland, that potential is there for amounts to exceed a hundred millimetres," said Barney.

"And even some pockets — it's not out of the question that there might be some areas closer to 200 millimetres, so it's a fairly intense rainfall. We don't see those too too often."

Rainfall of between 50 and 75 millimetres is expected through to Monday morning for western and central Newfoundland areas.

The rainfall, paired with winds up to 100 km/h, will make for a weekend of unpleasant weather.

Heavy downpours can cause flooded roadways and washouts, Environment Canada warns, while rapidly rising rivers can sweep away bridges, culverts, and buildings.

People are asked to clear storm drains of leaves and other debris.
