Trying co-stars Rafe Spall and Esther Smith have revealed they are expecting a baby.
The actors - who play a husband and wife in their hit Apple TV+ series - spilled the beans during an appearance on ITV's Lorraine on Tuesday. They announced their baby joy for the first time on TV on Tuesday.
"I have got a little bump," Smith confirmed with a smile. Looking every inch the proud dad to be, Spall said the pair were "very excited" to be welcoming their first baby together.
The actors had been talking about Trying - which follows a couple who decide to adopt after struggling to conceive - when host Lorraine Kelly teased that they had some wonderful news.
What, how, and why?
"I have to say, everybody always says, 'Oh what remarkable chemistry you've got' and it's no surprise because of course you're a couple and you've got great news…" she said. "You've got a wee bump!"
"Yeah I have got a little bump," Smith confirmed.
"Congratulations, that's fantastic!" exclaimed Kelly, asking if the pregnancy might get woven into the next series of their show.
“Well, we hope there is another series,” said Smith, and Spall also said it wasn't known yet. Trying began in 2020 and so far there have been three series, with the fourth due to start this month.
But Kelly insisted there would be another series to come. She said: “Oh there will be!” The presenter added: "There has to be."
"I think we will have a baby and then we will carry on," Smith said. “It is really exciting, we are very excited,” added Spall.
Kelly said that she was "so delighted" for the TV stars. "It's joyful, the whole thing is just wonderful," she gushed.
How long have Rafe Spall and Esther Smith been a couple?
Spall and Smith were first romantically linked in late 2022, when they were spotted holding hands.
Spall, who is the son of Harry Potter star Timothy Spall, was previously in a relationship with actor Elize du Toit, who played Izzy Davies in Hollyoaks. They tied the knot in 2010 and share three children, a daughter and two sons.
