'House of Cards': First Season 5 Trailer Teases New Same-Sex Relationship for Kevin Spacey's POTUS

House of Cards is electing to reexamine the ambiguous sexuality of Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood.

In the first trailer for the Netflix drama’s forthcoming fifth season (bowing on May 30), we get a fleeting glimpse of POTUS in what appears to be the throes of a hookup with an unidentified male companion. House of Cards has, of course, previously explored Frank’s bisexuality, most notably with his late bodyguard Edward Meechum.

Throughout much of the above trailer, President Underwood is heard mocking the American people and expressing his intention to prolong the Underwood dynasty for decades.

Listed as series regulars in Season 5 (in addition to Spacey and Robin Wright) are Michael Kelly, Jayne Atkinson, Neve Campbell, Derek Cecil, Paul Sparks and Joel Kinnaman.

House of Cards faces a crucial test when it returns later this month: It will be the first season without series creator Beau Willimon. Longtime EPs Melissa James Gibson and Frank Pugliese took over for Willimon following Season 4. “It’s a big loss,” Sparks conceded last fall. “But [Melissa and Frank] have been in the writers room for a long time, they’re theater writers just like Beau was — they get it. We are in very, very good hands.”
