Two women were killed in an SUV crash near the Sunnyside area of Fresno on Tuesday afternoon.

The pair were traveling north on Clovis Avenue, approaching Butler, when the driver moved to the right portion of the lane to pass another car, the CHP said. The SUV struck a metal post, then veered into a cinder block wall.

The women — Yia Vang, 66, of Fresno and Mai Yang Vang, 81, of Fresno — were relatives, the Fresno County Coroner’s Office confirmed in an update Wednesday.

Mai Yang Vang was the passenger and died at the scene. Yia Vang, the driver, was transported to Community Regional Medical Center, where she died.

The CHP said it did not appear that drugs and alcohol were a factor in the fatal crash. The investigation was ongoing.
