All About Tyla's Parents, Sharleen and Sherwin Seethal

The Grammy-winning artist, who recently made her Met Gala debut, is the daughter of Sharleen and Sherwin Seethal

Get to know Tyla's parents.

Born in Johannesburg in January 2002, the "Water" singer is the daughter of Sharleen and Sherwin Seethal.

While her parents have remained largely out of the spotlight in comparison to the superstar hitmaker, the Grammy-winning artist has opened up about her mom and dad in various interviews.

The singer's rise to fame is particularly interesting given the timeframe her parents allotted her to pursue her music dreams. Nonetheless, the proud parents have supported her through it all — and continue to as Tyla's star shines brighter and brighter.

"They love it," Tyla told PEOPLE exclusively of her family's support in March. "They always calling me screaming, crying. I'm very close with my family and my siblings... They watched the performances. I'm happy they get to experience it with me."

Tyla paid tribute to the theme of "time" when she made her Met Gala debut on May 6, wearing a Balmain gown that embodied an hourglass. "I just love the outfit and how everything turned out," the singer told Vogue on the Met steps.

They raised Tyla in South Africa

Tyla (pronounced TIE-Luh) was born Tyla Laura Seethal in Johannesburg, South Africa. She "grew up listening to Afrobeats, amapiano, house Kwaito and all of that," the artist told PEOPLE of the popular genres in her home country. "But also a lot of R&B and pop also played in my house and I looked up to a lot of R&B and pop artists."

She continued, "With 'Water' I'd describe it as the perfect blend. Being from South Africa is the reason why my sound is what it is."

They gave her 'one year' to pursue her music dreams

If Tyla's rise to the top of the music charts seems fast, it's because she had no choice! The "Water" singer revealed during an interview with 102.7 KIIS FM that her parents gave her a specific timeframe to pursue her dreams as a musician.

"Basically, my parents were like, 'You have to study, there's no way you're doing music,'" Tyla recalled to the radio outlet what her mom and dad initially told her at the beginning of her career. She said they considered the pursuit "unrealistic" at the time.

"Especially in South Africa, not a lot of people at the time... were doing what I wanted to do, which was to become a pop star globally," Tyla continued. "So my parents were like, 'Be realistic. You need to work, this can be a side hobby."

Although Tyla said she "almost had to do it," she admitted she'd "cry on [her] mother's bed" and beg for "one year" to pursue her dreams. "Because I was a year younger, luckily, they were like, 'Okay... You can have one year.'"

Tyla told PEOPLE, "After a lot of convincing they allowed me to do just that." Within that one year, Tyla released "Getting Late," signed to Epic Records under Sony Music and won a Grammy Award.

They supported Tyla at the Grammys

Tyla earned her first Grammy nomination in November 2023 and won the award for the inaugural African Music Performance Grammy in February 2024. She had her parents, Sharleen and Sherwin, by her side at the big event.

Tyla took photos with her proud mom and dad on the red carpet as she posed with her first Grammy.

They visited America for the first time in February 2024

Talk about a memorable first trip to America! Tyla's parents visited the United States for the first time to support their daughter at the Grammy Awards.

"They love it, they even went to Vegas! They were saying, 'What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!' They were having the time of their lives," Tyla told Variety on the red carpet at Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party. "I'm happy, I'm so happy."

Prior to the Grammys, Tyla told Y100 Miami that Chipotle would be the first place she took her parents in America. "Because I love Chipotle, Chipotle is so good!"

They joined Tyla at the SA Style Awards in South Africa

In addition to accompanying Tyla at the Grammys in February 2024, Sharleen and Sherwin supported their daughter at the SA Style Awards in South Africa later that March. The singer won the award for most stylish performing artist at the ceremony that honors young talent who've made noteworthy contributions across a variety of industries around the world,
