Vega Line Moving offers to settle with Cape Breton woman

A British Columbia moving company has offered to settle with a Cape Breton woman who claims she was overcharged following a cross-country move.

Darlene Fry moved from Lac La Biche, Alta., to Sydney Mines, N.S., last year to care for her 87-year-old mother.

She said Vega Line Moving and Storage was offering a promotion at the time of $1.15 a pound. The company quoted her between $2,000 and $3,500 to move her things to Cape Breton.

But when the move was completed, the company told her she had to pay $7,878.80 before it would deliver her goods. Fry said the company told her the shipment was heavier than first thought.

Fry went public with her complaint last month when she said the company was holding her belongings hostage in a storing unit until she paid up.

Fry says she managed to talk the company down to $6,500. She says she paid the bill even though she believes it was still inflated.

Now Vega Line Moving has offered to refund her a further $1,500. If Fry accepts she must agree to take no further action against the company, including legal action or posting negative reviews online.

The company tells CBC the story has hurt the company's image and it is trying to resolve the situation.

Fry has agreed to the settlement and the company says the cheque will be sent out immediately.
