Columbia's Water System Running at Full Capacity Despite Canal Breach

Columbia officials provided updates on the city’s water system in the wake of historic flooding on October 8. A portion of the Columbia Canal, which is part of the city’s water system, collapsed during the storm and the flooding that followed. Another section of the canal could collapse, but officials said the plant is running at full capacity. There are no plans to turn off the water, they said.

Workers have been fixing the canal since October 5, the day after the historic rainfall, and hope repairs will be completed soon. The South Carolina National Guard also is helping with the repairs.

A boil water advisory remains in effect for most of the area, and authorities have been distributing bottled water. Credit: YouTube/City of Columbia
