'My Roof Has Collapsed!': Canberra Hair Salon Floods During Heavy Rain

A sudden downpour hit the Australian capital of Canberra on Thursday, January 16, leading to sudden flooding in the formerly parched region.

The Bureau of Meteorology said 4 mm of rain fell on Canberra in the late afternoon and evening, which followed a lighter shower that morning. The weather bureau had earlier warned that thunderstorms may bring a “burst” of heavy rain to the city.

The Australian Capital Territory, like the surrounding state of New South Wales, had been in the grip of an extended drought. Nearly three-fifths of the state was classified as in “intense drought” on January 15, according to the Department of Primary Industries. Credit: Penny Lindh via Storyful
