Two fires had burned more than 1,200 acres of woodland around Izmir, Turkey’s third largest city, by Monday, August 19, with residents reportedly pleading for help from authorities as the fires neared the metropolitan area.

Turkish reports said four fires broke out in different regions on August 18: two in Izmir province and two in the southwestern Muğla province.
