New volunteers step forward to ensure popular Scotia Days festival continues

MULGRAVE — New municipal staff and a small army of committed volunteers have saved the day – Scotia Days, that is – says Councillor Krista Luddington of Mulgrave.

“We’ve hired a recreation and physical activity coordinator, Mallory Laney – a welcome addition to the team, [and] we were very lucky and grateful to have some new volunteers come out this year,” she told The Journal in an email last week about Mulgrave’s 10-day-long signature summer event.

The slate of events includes: tea by the sea; golf and ball tournaments; steak BBQ; pub night; community yard sale; Christmas in July; youth putt for dough; seniors amazing race; pool parties; Market by the Sea; the 6th Annual Ambrose DeCoste Memorial Pool Tournament; sitcom celebration; pancake breakfast; book sale; community fair; adult dance; and Mulgrave’s Concert in the Cove.

“We will have a few new things added like a magic show, pet parade and cardboard boat racing,” Luddington said.

The upbeat mood contrasts sharply with the recreation department’s earlier call for people in the community to help mobilize the festival.

“The Scotia Days committee is in dire need of volunteers to come out and lend a helping hand,” it posted on Facebook in April. “Volunteering with the festival is a rewarding experience that lets you have input on the festivities, give back to your community and help to keep this 40-plus-year Mulgrave tradition going... All help is welcome and greatly appreciated.”

Said Luddington last week: “Our team is dedicated and has been working hard to get everything ready. Mallory and Kailey Brennan (Recreation Programmer, summer position) have taken charge and are doing a great job getting everything ready [and] we can never have too many volunteers and always welcome new faces to the [organizing] committee... It’s going to be another awesome year!”
