Below are the nominees for The Charlotte Observer’s boys’ high school athlete of the week.

This week’s nominees

Evan Boykin, Charlotte Christian track: The Knights’ junior ran the state’s fastest 100-meter dash this outdoor, a 10.60, to finish fourth against college runners at the Charlotte 49ers’ Classic March 14.

Boykin also ran a 49.78 to finish as runner-up in the 400 at the Clash of the Carolinas at Cuthbertson High on March 16.

Tim Brown, Hough track: The Huskies’ senior ran a personal-best 47.58 to win the 400 at the Marvin Ridge Invitational on March 16.

Brown, a High Point University commit, also won the 200 in 22.15 at the same meet.

Case Gibbs, Metrolina Christian baseball: The Warriors’ junior pitcher tossed a complete game, four-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts to lead Metrolina Christian to a 1-0 win at Gaston Christian on March 12.

Metrolina Christian (8-0) also won 15-1 at Cary Academy on March 11.

Gibbs is 3-0 on the mound with 27 strikeouts in 12 innings of work this season.

Eric Jacobsen, Lake Norman baseball: The Wildcats’ junior pitcher earned a save on the mound with five strikeouts in two innings to help Lake Norman to a 5-3 win at North Iredell on March 13.

The next day, Jacobsen earned the win on the mound with four strikeouts and only one hit allowed in 3.2 innings of work as Lake Norman beat Alexander Central, 9-5.

Jacobsen is 1-1 on the mound with 18 strikeouts in 13 innings of work, without allowing a run, while giving up just two hits in six appearances this season.

Jonathon Jones, Lincoln Charter golf: The Eagles’ senior shot a school-record 4-under par 32, with four birdies in his round, in a Catawba Shores’ 1A/2A match at Verdict Ridge Golf and Country Club on March 11.

Jones is leading the conference in scoring, averaging a 35 per nine holes this season.

Kristoffer Jones, North Mecklenburg track: The Vikings’ senior ran a 14.39 to win the 110 hurdles at Hough on March 12. Jones also won the long jump (21-3) and the triple jump (47-10) at the same meet.

Jones has the state’s fastest time in the 110 hurdles (14.36), while also leading the state in both the long jump (23-1) and triple jump (47-10) this outdoor season.

John Rhodes, Charlotte Catholic golf: The Cougars’ senior shot a 2-under-par 34 to earn co-medalist honors, while leading the Charlotte Catholic golf team to a two-shot victory over Providence at Charles T. Myers Golf Club on March 11.

Rhodes also shot a 3-under-par 33, to earn co-medalist honors again, while leading his team to a six-shot victory over East Rowan at The Warrior Golf Club on March 12.

Carter Sterchi, Porter Ridge baseball: The Pirates’ senior threw a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts and two walks in a 4-0 win at Myers Park on March 13.

Porter Ridge also won 12-2 at East Mecklenburg March 11 and 3-0 at Mooresville on March 14.

Sterchi is 1-0 on the mound with 21 strikeouts in 13 innings of work for Porter Ridge (4-2) this season.

Wade Sorrells, Myers Park golf: The Mustangs’ senior shot a 1-over par 37, with two birdies in his round, to earn medalist honors while leading his team to victory at Palisades on March 12.

Sorrells also shot a 3-under-par 33, with three birdies in his round, to earn medalist honors, while leading the Myers Park golf team (2-1) to victory over South Mecklenburg at Myers Park Country Club on March 14.

Brady Thompson, Providence baseball: The Panthers’ senior tossed a complete-game, one-hitter with eight strikeouts in a 14-0 win over Butler on March 12.

Thompson also hit a home run in a 7-1 victory at Butler on March 14.

Thompson is 2-0 on the mound for Providence (4-2) this season.

Gianni Vines, West Cabarrus track: The Wolverines’ senior jumped a personal-best 6-10 to win the high jump at a home meet on March 13.

Vines’ jump was the No. 1 high jump in the state, and No. 6 in the nation this outdoor season.

Vines also jumped 6-2 to finish as runner-up at the Marvin Ridge Invitational March 16.

Zach White, Hickory Grove Baseball: The Lions’ sophomore went 0-for-2 at the plate with a run scored in a 5-3 win over Sun Valley on March 11.

The next day, White was 2-for-2 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored in a 15-0 victory over Gaston Day.

White finished off the week going 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI in 4-2 loss to Weddington in 10 innings on March 14.

White is hitting .550 with a home run, two doubles and five RBI for Hickory Grove (4-1) this season.
