Vote: which South Sound high school sports team was the best this spring?

The 2024 spring sports season produced several local state champions and others who were close to winning it all. Which high school sports team in the South Sound was the best this spring? Vote now. Voting will remain open until noon Friday, June 7.

Cascade Christian boys golf — Cruised to the 1A boys golf title behind a trio of top-10 individual finishers. Senior Burke McFarland posted a two-day total of 149 (72-77) for second place at Riverside Golf Club in Chehalis. Senior Jacob Janho (78-74) tied for third and sophomore Zeke Prociw (75-78) tied for fifth.

Emerald Ridge softball— Took second place in the 4A state softball tournament in Richland, losing to Jackson in the championship game. Collected wins over Moses Lake, top-seeded Skyview and Kentwood in the semifinal round to advance to the championship game.

Enumclaw baseball — The 2A state tournament’s runner-up, Enumclaw dropped the 2A championship to Columbia River, 3-2. But the Hornets regularly demolished league and district counterparts, earning 24 straight wins before the title game. Outscored opponents 247-70.

Franklin Pierce boys soccer — Captured the program’s first state championship, beating Sehome in a penalty kick shootout in the state championship game. After falling behind late in the title game, Malachi Chang scored the game-tying goal on a header to force overtime. Franklin Pierce scored at least one goal in every game this season.

Puyallup baseball — Finished with a 25-6 overall record, losing just four times to teams in Washington this spring and coming in second place at the 4A state tournament at GESA Stadium in Pasco, losing 4-3 to undefeated Richland in the title game. Puyallup collected wins over Newport, Camas and Bothell to advance to the championship game.

Sumner boys golf — Won the 4A state championship at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane behind three top-10 finishes by Tyson Arthur (70-71), Ryan Takeshita (73-70) and Brock Maulding (73-71).

Auburn Riverside softball – Toppled Snohomish, 11-6, to claim the 3A state softball championship on May 25. No. 5 Ravens routed No. 4 Mount Spokane in the state quarterfinals, 20-7, before upsetting top-ranked University in convincing fashion, 15-4, in the semis.

Emerald Ridge girls track and field – Dominated the field (102 points) and set a new state meet record en route to the 4A girls state title at Mount Tahoma Stadium in Tacoma. Second-place Kamiakin scored 49 points. Guided by three-time champion JaiCieonna Gero-Holt (100-hurdles, shot put, high jump), two-time champ Mikayla Gardley (300-hurdles, 200-meters), and freshman 100-meter champion Iren Derricks.

Tumwater softball — Took second place in 2A state tournament, losing 4-2 to Sedro-Woolley in the state championship game. Tumwater collected wins over Ephrata, Aberdeen and second-seeded North Kitsap to advance to the championship game.

White River girls golf — Won the 2A state championship at MeadowWood Golf Course behind top-five individual placings by Lexie Mahler (T-2) and Alle Klemkow (T-4).
