Wasfi Ghalban ID'd as 200 Wellesley St. E. homicide victim

Police identified Wasfi Ghalban as the man who was killed in his St. Jamestown apartment earlier this week and said they want to speak with anyone who spoke with the man in the days leading up to his death.

Ghalban, 47, was found inside his second floor apartment at the 200 Wellesley St. E. highrise just before midnight on Wednesday after a neighbour noticed his door was ajar and called police.

In a news release, police said Ghalban's body had "significant signs of trauma." Paramedics were called to the building, a Toronto Community Housing property, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Homicide Det. Sgt. Mike Carbone wants to speak with anyone who spoke with Ghalban from Dec. 1 to the time of his death.

Residents, who spoke with CBC Toronto as police descended on the building on Thursday, said Ghalban kept to himself.

“You would think that they weren't even living there because I've never heard next door before," said Shaun Fickling, who lives in the unit next to Ghalban's.

Most people in the building didn’t know about the death until police began knocking on doors in search of information. The building has been plagued by several high-profile incidents, including the death of a two-year-old girl earlier this year— her babysitter was arrested and charged months later.

There have been 55 homicide cases in Toronto in 2014.
