Water rescue crews respond to potential drowning on Neuse River in Raleigh

Following a five hour search Saturday afternoon, the body of a swimmer was recovered in the Neuse River in Raleigh.

Emergency crews from multiple local agencies searched the Neuse River for a possible drowning victim around 4 p.m. Saturday. At 8:50 p.m. the body of a man was found.

According to witnesses on the river, the man was swimming with his family, went underwater at one point and never resurfaced, the Wake County Sheriff’s office said.

The identity of the victim has not been released.

The Wake County Sheriff’s Office said it responded to the drowning report at 4 p.m., joining other local agencies in searching a section of the river near the Neuse River Greenway Trail and Loch Raven Parkway.

This section of the river crosses under the Neuse River Greenway and is known as Raleigh Beach.

Last month, emergency crews recovered a body in the same area of the Neuse River.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
