Wear rubber boots when exploring your flooded basement
Flood experts dealt with an overwhelming number of flooded basements in Windsor since the latest storm moved into the region yesterday.
With hundreds of homes flooded in Tecumseh and Windsor, safety officials are warning residents to be careful not to injure themselves when working on getting rid of the water.
Jim Parker, president of the construction company Parker D.K.I., suggested several tips, including that homeowners remove any dry material, if they can.
Leave the bulk of the work to experts, Parker explained, and always be mindful of electrical equipment.
"Be concerned about the electrical in the basement, the power bars on the floor or [outlets]," he said. "Nobody I know of has ever been electrocuted, but you always gotta have that worry," he said.
He suggests anyone wear rubber boots when walking around in their basement.
The Electrical Safety Authority also suggests people avoid their basement altogether if water has risen above the level of electrical outlets, baseboard heaters or furnace.
