Weather knocks out power for 50,000+ in Charlotte region

There were more than 50,000 power outages in the Charlotte area Monday just before 6 p.m., according to Duke Energy. The power losses were concentrated in Mecklenburg, Iredell, Rowan and Cabarrus counties to include areas in and around Charlotte, Salisbury, Statesville, Hickory, Gastonia and Concord.

This comes as fast-moving severe weather sweeps through the Charlotte-area bringing with it hail, heavy rain, lightning and tornado warnings.

It is unclear when power will be restored to these areas and severe weather is expected into the evening.
