Welcome to Edition, your new News & Observer interactive experience

We launched Triangle Now, our updated e-edition pages, about two years ago. The response was somewhere between crickets and cicadas.

On good days, it was crickety calm because The News & Observer leaned into late-night sports coverage. Loyal subscribers were astute enough to figure out this was how they could get the latest stories on games that ended past bedtime.

On other days — when the Triangle Now edition mixed ongoing news coverage with sports — it was more like well-meaning cicadas popping out everywhere and all at once, announcing their questions with authority.

Don’t read too much into my mangled symphony of insect metaphors.

No matter the level of chatter, we try mightily to listen.

That’s why we’re pleased to present The News & Observer’s Edition, our subscriber-driven effort to improve the digital reader experience.

‘Easier to access, easier to read’

McClatchy newsrooms have been testing their version of the Edition, and feedback has been positive. We’re now ready to share those good vibes with our subscribers.

Jeremy Chisenhall, the Georgia editor overseeing the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer and The Macon Telegraph, says their Edition is “easier to access, easier to read and easier to share with others.”

Greg Farmer of The Kansas City Star describes their new improvements as “where we’re sharing every day the must-see stories, videos, photos and other content you can’t find anywhere else.”

Here is what News & Observer and Durham Herald-Sun subscribers can expect from the Edition:

  • Responsive tabbed pages and quick access section navigation.

  • Story links inside articles that let you dig deeper into what you’re reading.

  • The ability to watch videos and browse photo galleries that enrich your reading journey.

  • Interactive puzzles and games you don’t need to print to enjoy (though you still can if you want to).

  • Enhanced features that make it easier to share your favorite articles.

  • Intuitive navigation that should give you a comfortable reading experience on all devices – desktop computer, laptop, phone and tablet.

The best part: The Edition is included in your subscription. Score!

During March, when the Triangle resumed its role as the center of the college basketball universe, we saw the e-edition audience swell, especially on weekends. The Edition will enhance that experience from now until next March and beyond because, hey, everyday is college basketball season in North Carolina.
