West End stabbing a 'very brutal attack,' Winnipeg police say

A 23-year-old woman was stabbed between five and eight times and sent to hospital in critical condition after a fight turned bloody in Winnipeg's West End Friday.

The woman encountered another woman and a man in the area of Sargent Avenue and Spence Street at about 4:10 p.m. Police said the two women got into a fight, which escalated when the female suspect pulled a knife out from a white purse and stabbed the victim several times.

"Our victim was stabbed multiple times, multiple times to the upper body causing serious injuries," Const. Jason Michalyshen said Saturday.

"[It was] a very brutal attack and it was witnessed by some members of the public."

The man and female suspect left the area.

A trail of blood, still visible on the concrete Saturday, led from the scene of the stabbing to a rooming house nearby, where a tenant called police. The victim allegedly waited in a bathroom in the building until emergency crews arrived.

The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition but has since been upgraded to stable.

David Cuvos, the caretaker of the building, said police knocked on his door after the stabbing asking for supplies to help them clean up the scene.

"Cops knock on my door: 'Do you have a paper towel?' Pardon me?" he said.

Justin Robinson said he witnessed the fight unfold.

"I warned people to stay off the streets and out of the way," he said.

The female suspect is believed to be roughly 25 years old. She is described as thin and about five-foot-five-inches tall.

The suspect was wearing her long dark hair in a ponytail at the time of the stabbing, police said. She was also wearing prescription glasses and a colourful sun dress with a floral pattern. Police said she has been since seen wearing blue shorts and a pink T-shirt.

The man, who has not been named as a suspect, is in his mid 20s. He is about six feet tall and has short dark hair, police said.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts or identity of the female suspect is asked to call investigators at 204-986-6668 or call Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
