What do you get if you cross a zebra and a donkey? Rare 'zonkey' born in Mexico

What has black and white stripes and looks like a donkey? A zonkey.

Khumba, born at a zoo in Mexico, is actually a rare cross between a zebra and a donkey.

The foal's official term is a 'zebroid' - the name for a cross between a zebra and any other equine.

He was born after stripy mum Rayas, and blue-eyed, dwarf albino donkey dad Ignacio, were housed together at Reynosa zoo, in North Mexico.

The chances of the two animals successfully mating is extremely rare, as their DNA is normally incompatible, but soon after Rayas became pregnant and Khumba was born on April 21.

He is the latest addition to the 'zebroid' world, following on from Ippo, who was born in Italy last year and became instantly popular.

However, the previous examples of zonkeys around the world - including ones in China, Japan and the U.S.- show that he could grow up looking more like one of his parents than the other.
