Oliver Hudson is delving deeper into his relationship with mother Goldie Hawn.

On a recent episode of Hudson's Sibling Revelry podcast, which he cohosts with his sister Kate Hudson, the actor shared that his perspective on his childhood changed after he attended a week-long course at the non-profit Hoffman Institute, which he described as "unpacking the patterns that have been put upon you from your parents and then stepparents as well."

"I went in there thinking it was all going to be about my dad and then [Kurt Russell], my stepdad who raised me, but whatever that connection was, and then my dad who wasn't there," Oliver, 47, said. "My mom was going to be easy-breezy, because she was always the constant in my life. It was totally flipped on its head: my mother was the one that came up the most, my mother was the one that I had almost the most trauma about, interestingly enough."

Hawn, 78, shares Oliver and Kate, 47, with her ex-husband Bill Hudson, but she primarily raised the two kids with her longtime partner Russell, 73, whom she has been with since 1983.

Over the course of the podcast episode, Oliver said he had more to unpack regarding his relationship with his mother because of how present she was in his life, as opposed to his estranged father, whom Goldie was married to 1976 to 1982.

"So I felt unprotected at times; she would be working and away or she had new boyfriends that I didn't really like. She would be living her life, and she was an amazing mother," he said. "This was my own perception as a child who didn't have a dad and who needed her to be there, and she just wasn't sometimes."

Oliver shared that Hawn "came up far more than my dad" during the course and noted that while his father Bill was not often present in his life, "when I was with him, it was incredible."

"He paid attention to me, we played football, we played basketball, we were on the beach, he taught me how to fish," he recalled of when he did spend time with Bill, a musician and actor. "He was so present, but he was never there, you know what I mean? So it was really a perspective shifter for me."

Back in 2018, Oliver shared during an appearance on Larry King Now that he and Bill, now 74, were in communication with each other for the first time in years.

During the most recent podcast episode, Oliver added that attending the Hoffman Institute course helped him forgive and feel compassion to both his parents because "you realize that they're only repeating the s--- that they went through with their parents."

"The forgiveness of my father was huge because his dad left him when he was 5 years old in the middle of the night - gone, you know? My dad didn't do exactly that but essentially, he bailed," he said elsewhere in the podcast.
