Wife of former MUHC head Arthur Porter released on bail
Pamela Mattock Porter has been released on bail with conditions after being charged with conspiracy and laundering more than $22 million and being extradited from Panama.
On June 25, a Quebec judge denied bail to the wife of Arthur Porter, citing she was a flight risk. Friday’s Superior Court ruling overturned that judgment.
Arthur Porter is the former head of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) who is now embroiled in a legal battle following allegedly defrauding the $1.3-billion Montreal superhospital project. His wife is accused of helping him launder millions of dollars.
Strict conditions were imposed as a condition of Mattock Porter’s release on bail, namely that she has to turn in her Canadian and American passports, she must report to police at least twice a week and she’s not allowed to have contact with her husband.
She also has to make a $250,000 deposit.
Mattock Porter was extradited from Panama in May after she and her husband travelled there from their home in Nassau, Bahamas.
They couple was arrested separately by local authorities working in collaboration with the RCMP, Interpol and Quebec provincial police in late May.
Mattock Porter is set to return to court on Sept. 16 for the start of her preliminary hearing.
Her husband, a doctor who diagnosed himself with terminal lung cancer, remains in Panama to fight extradition.
